Description
The Mollisiaceae family comprises a diverse group of ascomycetous fungi. While many species are primary saprotrophs that aid in nutrient cycling, some representatives are known to be opportunistic pathogens that target stressed or injured plant tissues. Their presence is often identified by the formation of small, disk-shaped apothecia, which appear on decaying or necrotic organic matter.
These fungi typically affect woody plants, shrubs, and occasionally various agricultural crops. Pathogenic species utilize existing physical injuries or weak points in the plant's defense system to gain entry into the vascular or cortical tissues. Once established, they can impair the plant's ability to transport nutrients, leading to localized dieback and a significant decrease in physiological vigor.
Clinical signs of infestation include the development of necrotic lesions, browning or grey discoloration of the bark, and the appearance of characteristic fungal fruiting bodies. These tiny, cup-like structures are often found in clusters on the surface of dying branches or stems. If left unmanaged, these infections can expand, causing severe structural damage and potentially killing the affected host plant.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Mollisiaceae infections. High humidity, consistent rainfall, and stagnant air are the primary drivers of spore production and dispersion. The fungi thrive in moderate temperatures, spreading via wind-borne or rain-splashed spores that quickly colonize new, vulnerable hosts within an orchard or garden environment.
Effective control measures focus on integrated pest management practices. Key strategies include:
- Removing and burning infected plant debris to minimize inoculum sources;
- Pruning diseased branches to maintain crown airflow and reduce humidity;
- Applying preventive fungicidal treatments during the growing season;
- Promoting overall plant health through appropriate fertilization and water management to enhance natural resistance to fungal pathogens.
