Monilinia demissa
Description
The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Monilinia demissa, which is a specialized agent targeting specific host plants within the Rosaceae family. This fungus disrupts the normal development of floral tissues, leading to premature tissue necrosis and metabolic disturbances within the plant.
Primary hosts for this pathogen include various species of bird cherry (Prunus padus). The fungus is particularly destructive during the flowering season, as it targets developing blossoms and tender new growth, which are the most susceptible parts of the tree during the early stages of the growing season.
Key symptoms of an infection include the sudden browning and wilting of flowers and leaves, which often remain attached to the branches for a significant time. In conditions of high humidity, a greyish powdery mass of conidiospores can be observed on the affected twigs and flower clusters, indicating active sporulation.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the spread of Monilinia demissa. Wet, cool spring weather provides the optimal microclimate for spore germination and infection. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors that disseminate the spores from mummified fruits or cankers to newly developing shoots.
The damage caused by this disease is significant, as it reduces the tree's overall vigor and reproductive capacity. Effective control requires an integrated approach:
- immediate pruning and removal of all symptomatic branches;
- application of appropriate fungicides during the pre-bloom and post-bloom stages;
- maintaining good air circulation within the tree canopy;
- sanitation of the surrounding area to remove potential inoculum sources.
