Description
Monilinia yunnanensis is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing brown rot in various fruit-bearing trees. Belonging to the family Sclerotiniaceae, this organism is a significant threat to global agriculture, particularly in orchards where stone fruits are cultivated, as it causes severe blossom blight and fruit decay.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include stone fruit species such as peaches, apricots, plums, and cherries. The fungus is highly adaptive and can attack nearly every aerial part of the tree, including blossoms, peduncles, branches, and mature fruits, often resulting in significant economic losses for commercial fruit producers.
Symptoms typically manifest as sudden wilting and browning of blossoms, which may appear scorched. On branches, cankers often develop accompanied by gummosis. The most characteristic sign of the disease is the development of tan or gray concentric rings of conidia on the fruit surface, which eventually leads to the fruit shriveling into a mummified state.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on weather conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures during the bloom stage. Spores are easily disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insects, landing on susceptible tissues and initiating the infection process, which can move rapidly through an entire orchard if not managed properly.
Effective management requires an integrated strategy to minimize inoculum levels.
- Strict sanitation, including the removal of mummified fruits and blighted twigs.
- Regular pruning to improve air circulation within the tree canopy and reduce humidity.
- Applying protective and systemic fungicides during critical growth stages like bloom and ripening.
- Avoiding mechanical injuries to fruits during harvesting and transport to prevent entry points for the fungus.
