Witches' broom disease is a devastating plant pathology caused by the fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa. This basidiomycete primarily attacks cocoa trees (Theobroma cacao) and significantly impacts tropical agriculture. The disease is known for its ability to cripple cocoa production by inducing severe morphological changes and destroying the developing fruit of the host plant.
The disease targets meristematic tissues, specifically vegetative buds, flowers, and developing cocoa pods. The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to the host's growth cycle. Spores are primarily dispersed through rainwater splash and wind currents, making the wet tropical environment an ideal setting for the rapid transmission of the fungus between healthy and infected trees.
