Unlike many terrestrial pathogens, these organisms rely on specific hydrological conditions to complete their life cycle. Their primary niche in agricultural systems is often associated with water-logged soils or nutrient solutions in indoor farming setups.
The causative agent is characterized by a unique oogamous sexual reproduction process. These fungi form a distinct, branched mycelium that allows them to thrive in aquatic habitats. While they are often viewed as saprotrophs, they can act as opportunistic pathogens, particularly when plants are under stress due to root zone saturation or poor oxygenation in the growth medium.
The crops most susceptible to Monoblepharidaceae are those cultivated in hydroponic systems, as well as nursery seedlings grown in high-humidity conditions. The infection usually targets the root system, entering through natural openings or tissue damage caused by environmental stress.
