Monoblepharis sphaerica is a specific type of aquatic fungus belonging to the Chytridiomycota phylum. In an agronomic and algological context, this microorganism is classified as a pathogen that primarily affects filamentous algae living in freshwater bodies used for aquaculture or irrigation purposes.
The causative agent of the disease is an obligate parasite whose life cycle is closely linked to the aquatic environment. It is characterized by the presence of motile zoospores that actively move through the water column in search of a suitable substrate, such as algal filaments. The fungus penetrates the host cells by enzymatically degrading the cell walls.
The main crops susceptible to infection include various species of charophytes and green algae, which may act as undesirable vegetation in artificial ponds or aquaculture facilities. Although the pathogen does not directly affect higher agricultural crops, its presence can disrupt the biological balance of the water ecosystem.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as the whitening and destruction of algal filaments. Under a microscope, the spherical sporangia of the fungus, which give the species its name, are clearly visible on the affected areas. The process of tissue decomposition leads to the death of algal fragments and their settling at the bottom of the reservoir.
Conditions for the active development of the pathogen include high humidity and sufficient light, which promote the growth of host algae. Optimal temperatures for spore dispersal range from 15 to 22 degrees Celsius. Effective preventive measures include controlling water composition, ensuring proper aeration, preventing waterlogging in areas adjacent to water bodies, and employing biological pond cleaning methods.
