Monochaetia leaf spot is a plant disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Monochaetia karstenii. This fungus primarily targets the foliage and shoots of various woody plants, leading to cell death and the formation of distinct lesions that can significantly impair the plant's health.
The primary symptom of the infection is the development of necrotic spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, minute black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia appear within these spots. These structures contain spores, which serve as the primary inoculum for the spread of the disease to adjacent plant tissues.
Host plants typically include a variety of ornamental trees and shrubs. The pathogen often exploits existing wounds or areas of physiological stress, such as sunburn or mechanical damage, to penetrate the host's defenses and establish an infection colony within the plant's vascular system.
