Monodictys castaneae is a fungal pathogen that causes specific bark diseases in chestnut trees (Castanea species). This organism, belonging to the genus Monodictys, acts as a necrotrophic parasite, invading the bark tissues and often causing structural decay in the affected areas of the tree trunk and branches.
The primary host for this fungus is the European chestnut. While the fungus is often associated with the decline of trees already stressed by drought, poor soil conditions, or previous mechanical injuries, it can also initiate infections in weakened tissues. It is commonly found in both natural forest stands and managed agricultural orchards.
Symptoms of the infection typically include the development of darkened, necrotic lesions on the bark. As the pathogen matures, it produces spores that appear as dark, olivaceous-black cushions or velvet-like structures on the bark surface. These lesions can eventually coalesce, causing the bark to crack, peel, or collapse, leading to significant disruption of the tree's vascular system.
The development and spread of Monodictys castaneae are heavily influenced by environmental moisture. Spores are disseminated by wind and splashing rain, settling in crevices or wound sites. High humidity and temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius are ideal for the germination of spores and the subsequent colonization of host tissues.
The economic and ecological damage caused by this pathogen includes reduced vitality of the tree, canopy dieback, and in severe cases, death of the entire plant. Effective management strategies involve:
