The causative agent of the disease is the imperfect fungus Monodictys levis, belonging to the group of hyphomycetes. This microorganism leads a saprotrophic or weakly parasitic lifestyle, colonizing plant tissues already weakened by other pathogens or unfavorable environmental conditions. Most often, the fungus is found as a component of fungal complexes on damaged areas of agricultural and forest crops.
The range of crops susceptible to Monodictys levis is quite broad. The pathogen is detected on roots, stems, and fruits of many vegetable, industrial, and ornamental plants. In particular, the fungus can develop on weakened tissues of potatoes, sugar beets, and various cereals, especially during long-term storage or when agrotechnical standards are not met in the field.
The main symptoms of the infection include the appearance of dark, brown, or almost black coatings on the surface of the affected tissues. Upon close examination, fungal sporulation is visible, forming dense clusters. Under the influence of fungal metabolites, plant tissues may soften, showing signs of surface necrosis, often accompanied by secondary bacterial infections.
The development of the disease is closely linked to high air and soil humidity, as well as moderate temperatures. Monodictys levis actively spreads through spores, which are carried by wind, raindrops, or plant debris. The infection progresses particularly quickly in poorly ventilated areas, in overcrowded plantings, or when temperature conditions during storage of the harvested crop are violated.
Control measures include a complex of agrotechnical practices: crop rotation, deep plowing of crop residues, and timely harvesting. To prevent the spread of the infection, it is crucial to monitor humidity in storage facilities and conduct regular disinfection of warehouses. Chemical control is usually preventive and involves the application of broad-spectrum fungicides upon the first appearance of infection symptoms.
