Description
Monosporascus root rot is a devastating soil-borne disease caused by the fungus Monosporascus cannonballus. It is a major limiting factor in the commercial production of cucurbits worldwide, particularly in warm, arid, and semi-arid agricultural regions.
The primary hosts affected by this pathogen include melons (muskmelons, cantaloupes), watermelons, and squashes. The fungus survives in the soil for extended periods as thick-walled perithecia, which are highly resistant to environmental stress and conventional fungicide treatments.
Symptoms typically appear as the plants approach fruit maturity. Infected vines exhibit sudden wilting, often starting with the older leaves yellowing and drying out. Root inspection reveals characteristic dark necrotic lesions and small, black, spherical fruiting bodies visible to the naked eye upon closer examination.
The development of the disease is strictly temperature-dependent, with the pathogen thriving at high soil temperatures between +25°C and +35°C. Excessive moisture combined with high temperatures facilitates the germination of fungal spores, leading to rapid spread throughout the irrigation network and fields.
Effective management strategies are limited and require an integrated approach. Recommendations include long-term crop rotation with non-host species, soil solarization to reduce inoculum density in the upper soil layers, and the utilization of tolerant rootstocks for grafting susceptible cucurbit varieties.
