Description
Monosporascus eutypoides is a soil-borne ascomycete fungus that causes severe root rot and vine decline in various cucurbit crops. This pathogen is known for its ability to survive in the soil for several years through resistant resting spores, making it a persistent and difficult challenge for farmers worldwide, especially in arid and semi-arid regions.
The host range of this fungus primarily includes melons, watermelons, cucumbers, and pumpkins. It is particularly devastating in large-scale agricultural operations where crop rotation practices are neglected, leading to a build-up of the pathogen in the soil over successive growing seasons.
The symptoms usually appear during the mid-to-late stages of fruit development. The most recognizable signs include progressive chlorosis and yellowing of the lower leaves, followed by rapid wilting of the vines. If the root system is examined, it will show extensive necrosis, destruction of feeder roots, and the presence of small black structures known as perithecia.
The spread and severity of the disease are strongly linked to high soil temperatures and specific irrigation practices. The fungus thrives when soil temperatures exceed 25°C. Once the pathogen colonizes the roots, it compromises the plant's ability to transport water and essential nutrients, which often results in the sudden collapse of the plant during hot periods.
Management of Monosporascus root rot requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach because chemical control alone is often ineffective. Key strategies include:
- Implementing long-term crop rotation cycles (5+ years).
- Grafting susceptible cultivars onto resistant rootstocks.
- Solarization or chemical soil fumigation before planting.
- Improving soil drainage and monitoring moisture levels carefully.
