Morenoina festucae is a fungal pathogen classified within the order Rhytismatales that primarily infects species of the Festuca genus (fescues). As a specialized parasite of grasses, this fungus completes its lifecycle on the leaves and stems of host plants, often persisting as a saprotroph on necrotic tissue before establishing itself as a pathogen during favorable environmental conditions.

The host range is predominantly limited to grasses within the Poaceae family, with fescues being the most susceptible plants. This fungus is commonly found in grasslands, meadows, and managed turf areas. While it is rarely responsible for total crop destruction, its presence is a significant indicator of environmental stress and potential loss of vegetation quality, particularly in permanent grass swards.

Symptoms of infection are characterized by the development of small, dark, elongated apothecia (fruiting bodies) on the surface of leaf blades. These fruiting bodies often appear as black, slightly raised spots or streaks that disrupt the leaf epidermis. Severe infections lead to yellowing (chlorosis) of the foliage, leaf necrosis, and a general reduction in the vigour and biomass production of the grass stand.

High atmospheric humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense canopy layers create optimal conditions for the dispersal of fungal spores. The pathogen thrives when moisture remains on the leaf surface for extended periods, facilitating the germination of spores and the subsequent colonization of host tissues.

Effective management strategies focus on modifying the microclimate of the grass stand to inhibit fungal growth. Recommended practices include ensuring proper soil drainage to reduce humidity, regular mowing to remove infected leaf tips, and avoiding over-fertilization that results in excessively dense foliage. By reducing the accumulation of dead plant material, the overall inoculum load can be significantly decreased. In professional turf or seed production settings, the application of targeted fungicides may be required if disease pressure becomes severe.
