Watermelon mosaic virus

Moroccan spp.

Description

Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) is a destructive plant virus belonging to the genus Potyvirus. It is responsible for significant economic losses in the production of cucurbit crops globally. The virus disrupts the plant's physiological processes, leading to reduced photosynthesis, stunted growth, and poor fruit development, which ultimately decreases the market value of the crop.

The host range of WMV is extensive, primarily targeting members of the Cucurbitaceae family. Watermelon is a major host, but the virus also infects melons, pumpkins, squash, and cucumbers. Furthermore, numerous weed species serve as alternative hosts, harboring the virus throughout the year and acting as inoculum sources for new plantings.

Symptoms of the disease typically include a distinct mosaic or mottling pattern of light and dark green on the leaves. Infected plants often show signs of leaf distortion, vein banding, and crinkling. In severe cases, the entire plant architecture becomes stunted, and fruit set is significantly reduced, with harvested fruits frequently exhibiting abnormal shapes and mottling.

The transmission of the virus is primarily achieved through non-persistent pathways, with aphids acting as the most significant vectors. When an aphid feeds on an infected plant, the virus is acquired on its mouthparts and is then transmitted to a healthy plant within seconds. This rapid transmission cycle makes WMV extremely difficult to manage once it appears in a field.

Management of the virus relies heavily on preventative cultural and chemical practices. Growers should focus on the following strategies:

  • Effective control of aphid populations using systemic and contact insecticides.
  • Removing weed reservoirs in and around the fields.
  • Implementing crop rotation to break the viral life cycle.
  • Using reflective mulches to deter aphid landing on young seedlings.
