Description

Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus within the Potyviridae family. It is recognized as one of the most significant viruses affecting cucurbit crops worldwide, leading to severe yield losses and reduced quality of harvested produce.

The virus has a wide host range, primarily infecting crops such as watermelons, pumpkins, squashes, and cucumbers. Infected plants typically exhibit severe mosaic patterns, chlorosis, leaf distortion, and stunted growth. The fruits produced by infected plants are often misshapen, discolored, and unmarketable, causing significant financial impact for farmers.

The biological cycle of WMV is heavily dependent on aphid vectors. The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent, stylet-borne manner. Aphids acquire the virus during brief feeding probes on infected plants and can immediately transmit it to healthy plants. Once acquired, the virus remains viable in the aphid's stylet for only a short period.

Development and spread of the disease are driven by high aphid populations and favorable environmental conditions. The virus persists through the winter in perennial weed hosts, which serve as primary inoculum sources in the spring. As aphids migrate from these weeds to emerging crop fields, they initiate the primary infection cycle, which then spreads rapidly throughout the planting.

Effective control measures rely on an integrated approach:

  • Elimination of alternative weed hosts around field boundaries to reduce primary inoculum.
  • Implementation of insect control programs to manage aphid populations.
  • Use of reflective mulches to deter aphids from landing on plants.
  • Selection of resistant or tolerant cultivars to minimize the incidence of the disease.
  • Proper crop rotation and monitoring of early infection symptoms for quick removal.
