Mosaic and ringspot are common plant viral diseases characterized by localized or systemic infection, resulting in significant physiological disruption. These pathogens, frequently identified as members of the Nepovirus or Ilarvirus groups, utilize intracellular processes to replicate. Unlike fungal diseases, they cannot be cured with standard fungicides, making prevention the only viable strategy for agricultural management.
A broad range of crops is susceptible to these viruses, with red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) being a primary target. In raspberries, these viruses often cause significant yield losses and vigor decline. Other affected plants include strawberries, tomatoes, cucurbits, and various ornamental shrubs. The ability of these viruses to persist in soil or propagate through contaminated cuttings poses a persistent threat to perennial plantings.
The characteristic symptoms include distinct patterns of chlorosis, appearing as mottled green and yellow mosaic patches on leaves. In the case of ringspot, the symptoms are more specific, manifesting as distinct concentric circles, line patterns, or ring-like lesions on foliage. Advanced stages of infection often involve leaf curling, stunted development of the entire plant, and poor fruit development, often rendering the crop unmarketable.
Spread of these viruses typically occurs through vectors such as soil-borne nematodes, aphids, or thrips, which transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap. Additionally, mechanical transmission through contaminated pruning tools or contact between infected and healthy plants is a frequent cause of outbreaks. Environmental factors, such as high soil moisture which facilitates nematode movement, directly correlate with the spread rate.
The economic impact of mosaic and ringspot is substantial due to the reduction of plant lifespan and productivity. As there are no chemical pesticides to eliminate the virus once it has colonized the host, growers must focus on strict integrated management practices:
- Sourcing only virus-indexed, certified disease-free nursery stock.
- Regularly sanitizing tools between plants to prevent mechanical virus transmission.
- Implementing rigorous pest control programs to manage virus vectors like aphids and nematodes.
- Promptly rogueing (removing and destroying) infected plants to prevent further spread.
- Practicing crop rotation to avoid high populations of soil-borne vectors in garden sites.
