Genetic Potential and Morphology

The winter wheat variety "Ilias" by the French breeding company Limagrain is a soft wheat variety designed for stable production in temperate climates. Technically, it is an awnless wheat with a plant height of 90–100 cm. This height is optimized to balance vegetative biomass production with standability; while it has moderate lodging resistance, it performs best under precise growth regulation in intensive farming systems.

Agronomic Performance and Yield

The primary driver of yield for Ilias is its productive tillering capacity, ranging from 5.5 to 6.0 million stems per hectare. Combined with large grain size (1000-kernel weight of 40–45 g), this allows the variety to reach a yield potential of 7–8 tonnes per hectare. The 200–210 day vegetation period provides predictable planning for harvest operations.

Phytosanitary Profile

Limagrain’s French breeding program places significant emphasis on intrinsic variety immunity. Ilias shows high tolerance to a complex range of fungal diseases:

• Eyespot (Cercosporella), which is critical for early sowing windows;
• Yellow and brown rust (robust resistance through genetic markers);
• Septoria, powdery mildew, alternaria, and root rots.

This strong disease resistance profile enables farmers to optimize fungicide application schedules, thereby lowering production costs, though regular field scouting remains essential to capitalize on the variety's full yield potential.
