Yellow Mucronella (scientific name Mucronella flava) is a basidiomycete fungus known to colonize various woody plants and forest species. In an agronomic context, it acts as a pathogenic agent that thrives on dead or weakened organic matter, gradually transitioning into a parasite that can damage the root systems and stems of susceptible trees and shrubs.
This pathogen primarily targets trees and plants growing in humid, shaded environments or areas with poor soil drainage. It is commonly found in nurseries and dense forests, where moisture accumulates on the bark and near the soil level, providing an ideal substrate for the development of its characteristic fungal structures.
The most distinctive symptom of infection is the appearance of bright yellow or ochre-colored, spine-like fructifications emerging directly from the bark of the host plant. As the infection progresses, the inner tissues of the plant begin to decay, leading to localized rotting, structural weakening of the stem, and an overall decline in plant vigor, often manifested through chlorosis.
