Munkovalsaria is a genus of ascomycetous fungi associated with bark and wood necrosis in various deciduous trees. This pathogen typically behaves as a facultative parasite, exploiting weakened trees or compromised tissues to colonize the bark and underlying xylem. While it can persist as a saprotroph, under favorable conditions for the fungus, it poses a significant threat to the vascular system of the host plant.
The host range of Munkovalsaria includes various woody ornamental and fruit-bearing species. The fungus primarily targets trees that have been subjected to environmental stress, pest infestations, or improper horticultural practices. Infection pathways are usually open through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or sites of previous physical damage, where the fungus gains initial entry into the living tissues.
Visible symptoms of the infection often manifest as localized areas of dead bark, which may eventually crack or become sunken. Careful inspection of the affected areas reveals the presence of small, dark, dome-shaped fungal fruiting bodies erupting through the bark surface. As the mycelium colonizes the vascular cambium, affected branches show signs of wilting, premature leaf drop, and dieback, eventually becoming completely necrotic.

Frequent rainfall promotes the production and dispersal of fungal spores, which can be easily wind-borne. Trees grown in overcrowded or poorly ventilated areas are at a higher risk, as stagnant air and high ambient moisture facilitate the infection process and the rapid colonization of susceptible host surfaces.
Effective prevention and control of this pathogen require rigorous sanitation measures. It is essential to perform regular sanitary pruning to remove infected wood, ensuring that all tools are disinfected between cuts to avoid cross-contamination. Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and proper water management is critical, as healthy, resilient trees are significantly more capable of resisting the initial colonization by this fungal pathogen.
