Description
Verticillium wilt is a devastating soil-borne fungal disease caused by various species of the genus Verticillium. This pathogen infects the plant's vascular system, specifically the xylem, where it colonizes the tissues, physically blocking water transport and causing the plant to wilt and eventually die under heat stress.
The disease has a remarkably broad host range, affecting hundreds of different plant species. Economically important crops such as cotton, potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries, and various fruit trees are highly susceptible, often suffering significant yield losses, and in severe cases, total plantation failure.
Clinical symptoms typically start as chlorosis on the lower leaves, often appearing between the veins and sometimes on only one side of the leaf. As the infection moves upward, the plant wilts during the day and recovers at night. A diagnostic feature is the darkening or browning of the vascular tissue inside stems or roots, visible upon cutting.
Verticillium species thrive in cool to moderate soil temperatures and can persist in the soil for many years as microsclerotia. These microscopic structures are highly resistant to environmental stressors and serve as the primary inoculum source, allowing the fungus to survive in fields even in the absence of a host crop for extended periods.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Key strategies include planting resistant or tolerant cultivars, maintaining long-term crop rotation with non-host species, and practicing strict sanitation. Soil solarization or chemical fumigation may also be employed in high-value cropping systems to reduce the initial pathogen load in the field before planting.
