Description
Muyocopronaceae is a family of fungi belonging to the order Microthyriales of the class Dothideomycetes. From an agronomic perspective, representatives of this family most often act as pathogens causing various leaf spots and surface lesions on vegetative plant organs. These are specialized fungi that act as parasites or saprotrophs, primarily developing on tropical and subtropical crops.
The main type of disease caused by members of this family is leaf spotting and epidermis lesions on stems. The pathogen penetrates plant tissues, forming characteristic apothecia or perithecia, often shield-shaped or saucer-shaped, which adhere tightly to the leaf surface, forming dark spots of various configurations.
The range of affected crops includes mainly woody and shrubby plants, including fruit crops, palms, and evergreen ornamental species. Fungi are most commonly found on leaves, where they form dense, dark, sometimes almost black colonies, hindering normal photosynthesis and causing premature aging of the leaf blade.
Conditions for development and spread depend directly on humidity levels and temperature regimes. Muyocopronaceae fungi actively multiply under conditions of high air humidity and moderately warm temperatures. Spores spread with raindrops, wind, or insects, quickly infecting weakened or damaged areas of plants when a thin film of moisture is present on the surface.
The damage manifests in reduced overall plant productivity due to impaired photosynthesis and premature leaf drop. Control measures include an integrated protection system:
- Regular sanitary pruning and removal of infected plant debris.
- Adherence to agronomic standards for planting density to improve canopy aeration.
- Application of broad-spectrum fungicides at the first signs of disease spread.
- Monitoring humidity levels in greenhouses and using drainage systems in open areas.
