Myceliophthora disease is a serious fungal condition caused by fungi of the genus Myceliophthora. It is particularly notorious in the mushroom industry, where it is known as "gypsum mold" or "brown spot." This pathogen is highly aggressive, competing with cultivated mycelium for nutrients and space, often leading to total crop failure if left unchecked.
The causative agents are classified as mitosporic fungi (hyphomycetes). The disease type is primarily myco-parasitic, meaning the fungus attacks other fungal colonies or organic substrates. By secreting specialized enzymes, the fungus breaks down the nutritional composition of the substrate, effectively starving the cultivated plant or mushroom mycelium.
While mushroom cultivation is the primary target, certain species of this genus can also affect the roots of horticultural crops, leading to root rot and vascular wilting. Visible symptoms include the development of dense, powdery patches on the substrate surface. Initially, these patches appear white, but as the fungus matures and produces spores, they turn yellowish-brown or gypsum-like in appearance.
The development of Myceliophthora is heavily favored by high relative humidity (above 85%) and suboptimal ventilation in confined environments. Spores are easily disseminated through air currents, contaminated irrigation water, and farm equipment. The fungus thrives in stagnant air conditions where ammonia levels may be slightly elevated, which often occurs in poorly managed compost beds.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it can cause devastating losses in commercial agricultural operations. To manage and prevent the spread of the disease, growers should follow these practices:
- Implement rigorous pasteurization and sterilization of growing media.
- Ensure strict hygiene protocols for staff and equipment.
- Monitor humidity levels and improve air circulation to prevent moisture accumulation.
- Apply targeted fungicide treatments if legal and appropriate for the crop.
- Rapidly isolate and remove any symptomatic material to stop spore dispersal.
