Description

The causative agent of American leaf spot of coffee is the fungus Mycena citricolor, formerly known as Omphalia flavida. This fungus is a pathogenic basidiomycete that thrives in tropical climates. It is recognized as one of the most significant fungal threats to coffee plantations, capable of causing substantial economic damage in affected regions.

The primary host for this disease is the coffee plant, particularly Coffea arabica. While the fungus can occasionally be found on other woody plants in diverse agroforestry systems, the impact on coffee is unique due to the plant's high sensitivity and the fungus's specific adaptation to coffee leaf tissues.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by circular lesions on the leaves, which initially appear as yellow or straw-colored spots. As the infection progresses, the center of the spot becomes necrotic and can detach, leaving a hole in the leaf. A diagnostic feature is the emergence of small, bright yellow or orange fruiting bodies of the fungus, resembling tiny mushrooms, which develop directly on the affected leaf surface.

Environmental conditions are the main drivers of disease spread. The fungus flourishes in areas with high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures ranging between 20°C and 25°C. Dense shade and poor air circulation within the canopy create an ideal microclimate for the spores to germinate and infect healthy plant tissue.

Management strategies focus on reducing the pathogen inoculum and improving environmental conditions. Key preventive measures include:

  • Regular pruning to increase airflow and sunlight penetration into the canopy.
  • Sanitation by removing and destroying infected plant debris.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides during the wet season to protect foliage.
  • Proper selection of planting density to ensure adequate spacing between trees.

The damage caused by Mycena citricolor is multifaceted. Beyond the loss of photosynthetic area due to leaf drop, the disease affects the development of coffee cherries and can weaken the entire tree over several growing seasons. Effective management is essential for maintaining the productivity and sustainability of coffee farming systems in high-risk areas.
