While often discussed in the context of wood-decaying organisms, it is crucial to note that this fungus is not a primary pathogen of healthy, vigorous trees. It colonizes wood that is already compromised or dead, meaning it typically poses no threat to healthy garden or forest vegetation, although it may be found on trees that have been severely weakened by environmental stress or other primary infections.
The fungus is easily identified by its vibrant orange-colored caps, which are often slimy or sticky to the touch.
