The biological nature of this fungus is saprotrophic, meaning it feeds on decaying matter. However, in poorly managed fields with high moisture and acidity, its mycelium can colonize the root zones of seedlings, causing competitive stress or potentially creating micro-conditions that inhibit normal crop development.
