Fern bonnet

The fern bonnet (Mycena pterigena) is a small saprotrophic fungus belonging to the Mycenaceae family. Unlike agricultural pathogens, this fungus does not attack living crops but functions as a specialized decomposer that thrives exclusively on the decaying petioles of ferns, specifically those of the Dryopteris genus.

From an ecological standpoint, Mycena pterigena acts as a primary recycler of organic matter in moist environments. It plays a vital role in forest health by breaking down complex plant cellulose and lignin in fallen fronds. It is strictly a saprotroph and poses no risk to horticultural or arable crops, as it lacks the physiological mechanisms to invade healthy, living plant tissues.

The fungus is characterized by its minute, delicate fruit bodies. The caps are typically 2 to 8 mm in diameter, often exhibiting a pale pink or reddish-brown hue. The stipe (stem) is remarkably fragile and thin. Because of its size and specific substrate requirement, it is often overlooked during routine field inspections unless there is a concerted effort to study fungal biodiversity.

Environmental conditions conducive to the development of Mycena pterigena include high ambient humidity and moderate temperatures. It is primarily observed in late summer and autumn when the senescence of fern fronds creates an abundant supply of detritus. Sufficient moisture is the most critical factor for the maturation of the sporocarp.
