However, in professional agronomy and forest pathology, this species is strictly classified as a saprotroph, meaning it feeds on decaying organic matter rather than living tissue.
The fungus acts as a decomposer, specifically targeting coniferous needle litter and woody debris. It does not possess the pathogenic mechanisms required to infect or colonize agricultural crops or forest trees. Consequently, it is not a causal agent of any plant disease and poses no danger to crop yields or plant vitality.
The primary indicators of its presence are the fruit bodies, which typically emerge from the needle mat in coniferous forests. Unlike plant diseases, there are no symptoms of infection such as wilting, chlorosis, or vascular discoloration. The fungus is a clear indicator of active decomposition and healthy nutrient cycling within the soil layer.
Environmental requirements for the development of Mycena zephirus include high moisture levels and a significant accumulation of coniferous organic litter. The lifecycle of the fungus is limited to the soil surface and organic layers. It relies solely on external enzymes to break down cellulose and lignin found in dead plant parts.
