Mycenastraceae (Latin: Mycenastraceae) is a family of basidiomycete fungi that, within an agronomic context, act as soil-borne organisms capable of negatively affecting plant health. While many species are primary saprotrophs, their presence in agricultural soil can cause physiological stress in young crops, leading to inhibited growth and susceptibility to opportunistic infections.
The causal agents are fungi belonging to the Agaricomycetes class. These pathogens persist in the soil and organic matter, waiting for conditions that favor their development. They are particularly aggressive when they encounter compromised plant tissues or when the soil environment lacks the beneficial microflora necessary to suppress their spread.
A wide range of vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and young seedlings are susceptible to these fungi. The pathogens target the root zones, disrupting water and nutrient uptake. In advanced stages, the fungus may produce visible mycelium or fruiting bodies on the soil surface, leading to rapid wilting. The economic impact is felt through significant stand loss and reduced overall yield potential for affected crops.
Development is heavily dependent on soil moisture levels and drainage efficiency. To prevent infestations and manage the spread of the pathogen, producers should focus on integrated pest management practices:
- Improve soil structure and drainage to prevent prolonged waterlogging.
- Implement strict crop rotation schedules to break the disease cycle.
- Ensure proper sterilization of substrates used in nursery or greenhouse settings.
- Use systemic fungicides only when necessary as part of a targeted disease management program.
- Maintain optimal soil aeration to support healthy root development and natural resistance.
