While it may appear in agricultural fields, it does not attack living plant tissues and is not classified as a pathogen by any agronomic standards. It is a soil-dwelling fungus primarily known for its role as a saprotroph.
The biology of this fungus is centered on the breakdown of organic matter. It relies on non-living debris, such as leaf litter, old wood, or decaying plant material, to obtain nutrients. Because it lacks the parasitic mechanisms required to infect agricultural crops, it remains entirely harmless to field and greenhouse vegetables, cereals, or fruits.
You may encounter the fruiting bodies of Mycenastrum in areas with rich, moist soil. These structures are often referred to as puffballs, possessing a thick, leathery exterior that eventually breaks open to release spores. Their presence is usually an indicator of a biologically active and nutrient-rich soil environment, which is typically beneficial for plant growth.
The development of Mycenastrum is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and the availability of organic carbon in the topsoil. They flourish after periods of rain or in soil with high levels of organic matter. They do not require a host plant to complete their lifecycle and do not spread between plants in a pathogenic manner.
From an agronomical standpoint, there is no need for protective measures, fungicide applications, or prevention strategies against Mycenastrum. It does not cause crop damage, yield loss, or physiological stress.
