In the field of agronomy, it is recognized for its role in the decomposition of organic matter, although its presence on weak or decaying plant tissues can sometimes indicate issues with the soil health or residue management strategies.

The causal agent, belonging to the Marasmiaceae family, is characterized by a strong, distinct garlic odor caused by sulfur-containing compounds. While it is not a primary pathogen of healthy commercial crops, it colonizes decaying organic matter, which can have an impact on the soil microbial community and the nutrient cycling process within an agricultural field.
