Description
Mycoacia is a genus of fungi within the order Polyporales that acts as a wood-decaying pathogen. These fungi are primarily known for causing white rot in woody plants, as they possess enzymes capable of breaking down lignin, a complex polymer that provides structural integrity to the wood of trees and shrubs.
The host range of Mycoacia typically includes various hardwood species. While these fungi are essential for nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems by decomposing deadwood, they can behave as opportunistic pathogens in orchard settings, targeting weakened or wounded trees. Infection often occurs through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or animal damage to the bark.
Infected trees typically display characteristic fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches. These bodies are usually resupinate, meaning they are flat and spread out against the wood, with a unique spiny (hydnoid) surface texture. The color ranges from cream to yellow or orange. Internally, the wood becomes bleached, soft, and fibrous, losing its structural capacity.
The spread of Mycoacia is facilitated by high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are optimal for spore production and mycelial growth. Airborne spores land on exposed wood surfaces, germinating and colonizing the sapwood and heartwood. If left untreated, the fungus can significantly compromise the stability of the tree, leading to decay over several years.
To manage Mycoacia and prevent its spread in agricultural or landscaping environments, the following practices are recommended:
- Sanitize all pruning tools between cuts to avoid cross-contamination.
- Apply protective wound dressings or sealants to large pruning cuts or broken branches.
- Practice good tree maintenance to reduce stress and prevent bark injuries.
- Remove and destroy severely infected wood, as it acts as a persistent source of spores for surrounding healthy trees.
