Mycoaciella is a genus of basidiomycete fungi belonging to the family Meruliaceae. In the context of plant pathology and forestry, these fungi are recognized as wood-decay agents responsible for white rot. While they primarily function as saprotrophs, they frequently colonize weakened or wounded living trees, slowly degrading the xylem and compromising the structural stability of the host.
The host range of Mycoaciella predominantly includes various deciduous tree species, such as oak, beech, and birch. However, in garden and ornamental settings, fruit trees that have suffered from frost cracks, improper pruning, or pest-induced bark injuries are also susceptible. The infection typically establishes itself in these niches, where the tree's natural defense mechanisms are already breached.
The diagnostic symptoms of Mycoaciella infection include the emergence of crust-like or leathery fruit bodies on the surface of bark or wood. These structures often possess small, spine-like projections and exhibit colors ranging from cream to ochre. Internally, the affected wood undergoes a chemical transformation, losing its tensile strength and becoming brittle or fibrous, which is a hallmark of white rot fungi.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the development of the disease. The fungus thrives in humid environments, which are conducive to spore germination and the expansion of mycelium. Rain and wind facilitate the dispersal of spores from established colonies to vulnerable sites on healthy trees. Periods of stable, warm weather further accelerate the colonization process within the wood tissue.
Effective management and prevention focus on maintaining the physical health of trees and minimizing open wounds. It is essential to sanitize pruning tools and apply protective sealants to all major cuts to prevent spore ingress. Additionally, removing infected wood or trees showing significant decay is critical to reducing the overall inoculum pressure within the garden or forest ecosystem.
