Description
The Mycocaliciaceae family consists of a unique group of fungi that are primarily recognized for their specialized habit of growing on substrates such as bark, wood, or even lichen thalli. In agricultural and forestry contexts, they are categorized as opportunistic organisms that thrive in specific micro-habitats on woody plant structures.
The causal agents are microscopic fungi that belong to the class Eurotiomycetes. They typically act as weak parasites or saprotrophs, meaning they utilize the weakened or dying tissues of a host plant to fulfill their nutritional needs, rather than actively attacking vigorous, healthy plant tissues.
These fungi mainly affect perennial woody plants, including orchard trees and various ornamental species. Host plants with compromised bark integrity or those stressed by environmental factors are particularly susceptible to colonization by members of this family, which may then contribute to the further deterioration of the bark layer.
Identification of the disease is based on the presence of small, stalked, pin-like apothecia (fruiting bodies) emerging from the bark surfaces. The progression of these fungi is heavily dependent on high moisture levels and stagnant air, which facilitate the germination and spread of spores via wind or water splashing across the orchard or nursery.
Preventive measures focus on structural and sanitary management of the plantation. Key strategies include:
- Regular pruning of dead or diseased branches to reduce fungal substrates.
- Maintaining proper tree vigor through adequate irrigation and nutrient management.
- Applying protective wound paints to large pruning cuts or mechanical bark damage.
- Ensuring proper spacing to improve air circulation and prevent excess humidity.
