Description
Mycocaliciomycetidae is a subclass of fungi primarily associated with the bark of trees. In the field of plant pathology, these organisms are often considered indicator species for the ecological health of a stand, as their presence is frequently linked to the accumulation of dead organic matter on the surfaces of living or stressed trees.
The disease agent, belonging to the Ascomycota division, acts as an opportunist that colonizes the bark. The type of infection is categorized as a superficial bark infection, although in severe cases, the physiological stress caused by the fungus can weaken the host plant, making it more susceptible to environmental extremes.
Host plants typically affected include various temperate forest species, such as conifers and hardwoods. Older trees with rough, fissured bark provide ideal habitats for these fungi, where they thrive by utilizing the micro-climate created within the bark crevices.
Symptoms are distinct and usually manifest as small, stalked apothecia (fruiting bodies) that emerge from the bark. These structures appear as black, pin-like formations. Visible damage may also include necrotic spots on the bark surface and an overall reduction in the vigor of the tree's growth.
Preventive measures focus on minimizing the stress factors of the host tree. Proper arboricultural practices, such as thinning to improve air circulation and pruning deadwood, are highly effective. While chemical control is rarely needed, maintaining high plant vitality through proper fertilization and protection from mechanical bark injury is the best defense against these fungi.
