Mycogone

Mycogone, commonly referred to as wet bubble disease, is a devastating fungal infection that poses a significant threat to commercial mushroom production. The causal agent is the fungus Mycogone perniciosa. This pathogen specifically targets the fruiting bodies of Agaricus bisporus, leading to severe morphological changes and total loss of commercial viability of the crop.

The disease primarily affects cultivated mushrooms grown in controlled environments. Infection occurs when fungal spores are introduced into the casing soil or the substrate. Transmission is often facilitated by farm workers, contaminated tools, water splashes during irrigation, or insect vectors like phorid and sciarid flies that carry the spores from infected areas to healthy mushrooms.

Symptoms begin with the appearance of a white, dense mycelial mat on the casing soil. As the disease progresses, it attacks the developing mushrooms, causing hypertrophy of the stipe and malformation of the pileus. The infected mushrooms often appear as distorted masses. Eventually, the tissues soften and decay, often emitting a foul, pungent odor as secondary bacteria colonize the rotting mass.

The destructiveness of Mycogone is exceptionally high due to the rapid spread of spores. If left unmanaged, the infection can spread across the entire growing room in a single cropping cycle, resulting in complete yield failure. The resilience of the spores, which can survive in structural cracks and equipment for long periods, makes it one of the most feared diseases in the industry.

Effective management requires strict adherence to sanitary protocols and environmental control. Prevention strategies include pasteurizing the casing soil, maintaining optimal hygiene, and ensuring proper ventilation to reduce surface moisture. If an outbreak occurs, affected mushrooms must be removed immediately in plastic bags to prevent spore dispersal, followed by targeted disinfection of the surrounding area using recommended fungicides.
