The causative agent of this disease is Mycoplasma felis, a mollicute bacterium that lacks a rigid cell wall. This specific pathogen occupies the phloem tissues of plants, fundamentally disrupting the transport of nutrients and hormones throughout the organism. Being a systemic infection, it requires highly specialized management strategies to prevent complete crop failure.

A broad range of crops is susceptible to this infection, particularly solanaceous vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes. Furthermore, ornamental flowers and several fruit-bearing woody species can harbor the pathogen. In intensive farming, the presence of Mycoplasma felis leads to significant economic losses, as it renders affected plants incapable of producing viable, market-ready yields.

High temperatures and lack of precipitation often exacerbate the impact, as they encourage insect population surges.
