Mycoporaceae is a family of fungi within the order Arthoniales that primarily colonize the bark of trees and shrubs. In agricultural settings, these organisms are often observed as lichenized or bark-associated fungi. While many species are considered saprotrophs, they can act as opportunistic pathogens, particularly when a tree is already stressed by environmental factors or poor maintenance.

The causal agents are ascomycete fungi characterized by perithecia embedded directly into the substrate. They affect a wide range of woody hosts, focusing on the exterior tissues. By utilizing nutrients found in the outer bark layers, these fungi can expand their colonies, especially in environments where humidity remains high for prolonged periods, typical of temperate climates.

Symptoms of infestation include the appearance of distinct, often crusty, lesions or discolored spots on the bark. The affected areas may become brittle, lead to premature cracking, or show signs of localized necrotic tissue. Over time, the colonization can impair the bark's protective function, making the tree more susceptible to secondary infections and environmental stress.

Regular sanitary pruning to improve aeration and removing old, loose bark can significantly reduce the risk of infestation. Applying copper-based fungicides during the dormant season is a standard preventive measure, as it helps cleanse the bark surface and minimizes the potential for fungal buildup throughout the growing season.
