Mycoporum is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Dothideales, which acts as a pathogen or epiphyte on the bark of various woody plants. These fungi are characterized by the formation of small, often inconspicuous ascomata (perithecia) embedded within the bark or the lichen thallus. They represent a complex ecological group that can inhabit both healthy and decaying bark surfaces.

The host range of Mycoporum includes various fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as several ornamental hardwood species. While these fungi are often considered minor pathogens, they are frequently associated with aging trees where the accumulation of necrotic tissue provides a stable substrate for growth. They thrive in environments where tree maintenance has been neglected.

Symptoms of Mycoporum infection are often subtle. The primary indication is the appearance of minute, dark spots on the bark, which are the reproductive structures of the fungus. As the infection progresses, the affected areas of the bark may show signs of discoloration, roughening, or premature flaking. Unlike more aggressive diseases, Mycoporum does not usually cause rapid bark decay but contributes to surface deterioration.

The development of the fungus is strictly dependent on climatic factors, particularly high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. It spreads most effectively in poorly ventilated orchards where moisture remains trapped on the trunk and branches for extended periods. Spores are disseminated by rainfall splashes, wind, and the movement of insects across the bark surface.

The economic impact of Mycoporum is generally linked to the long-term weakening of the host tree. By colonizing the bark, the fungus creates a micro-niche that can facilitate the entry of more destructive pathogens, such as wood-decay fungi or canker-causing organisms. Effective management involves:

  • Regular brushing of tree trunks to remove old bark and mosses.
  • Ensuring proper canopy aeration through correct pruning.
  • Applying prophylactic lime whitewash to stems.
  • Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization.
