The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Mycosphaerella chrysanthemi. As an ascomycete pathogen, it is responsible for significant leaf spot symptoms in various floral crops. The fungus targets the leaf tissue, disrupting photosynthesis and leading to the eventual decline of the plant's structural and aesthetic integrity.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are chrysanthemums, including both commercial greenhouse varieties and garden-grown species. The fungus specifically attacks leaf tissues, which acts as the main site for infection, colonization, and subsequent spore production. Young, succulent tissues are often most susceptible, although all stages of the plant development can be affected if environmental conditions are favorable.

Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, or irregular spots that are often light brown or tan in color. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge, dark borders may develop, and the necrotic tissue often dries out. Under a hand lens, small black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia are visible within the centers of these spots, which are characteristic of this fungal pathogen.

Environmental conditions that favor the disease include high humidity, poor air circulation, and the presence of moisture on the leaf surface. The fungus thrives at moderate to warm temperatures, typically between 18°C and 25°C. Spores are easily disseminated by splashing water, overhead irrigation, contaminated tools, or even human activity within the planting area, spreading the disease rapidly throughout a crop.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to reduced market value due to damaged foliage, premature senescence, and in severe cases, plant death. Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation:

  • Sanitation by removing and destroying all infected plant material promptly.
  • Maintaining proper spacing between plants to enhance air circulation and reduce humidity.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep the foliage as dry as possible.
  • Applying preventive fungicide treatments, particularly during periods of high humidity.
  • Sterilizing greenhouse benches and tools regularly to prevent carryover of inoculum.
