Description

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Mycosphaerella grossulariae (anamorph Septoria grossulariae), responsible for a common and destructive condition known as septoria leaf spot. This fungal pathogen primarily targets the foliage, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are gooseberry and currant bushes. The infection typically affects the health of the leaves, and in cases of severe infestation, it can cause early defoliation, which hampers the bush's ability to store energy for the subsequent season.

Typical symptoms involve the formation of numerous small spots on the leaf blades. These spots are initially brown and irregular, but as the fungus matures, the centers turn white or light gray, bordered by a dark brown margin. The presence of tiny black fruiting bodies called pycnidia within these white spots is a definitive diagnostic feature.

The development of the fungus is heavily favored by warm, wet weather and conditions with high humidity. The pathogen overwinters on fallen leaves and debris, releasing spores during the spring when temperatures rise and rainfall provides the necessary moisture for the primary infection to spread to new leaves.

Economic damage is caused by the premature loss of foliage, which weakens the plant and leads to a decline in berry quality and overall yield. Management strategies should prioritize sanitation, such as removing and burying fallen leaves, and the application of protective fungicides to minimize spore germination and subsequent spread throughout the orchard.
