Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella horii, an ascomycete pathogen that specifically targets persimmon trees (genus Diospyros). This fungus acts as a parasite on the foliage, significantly disrupting the tree's photosynthetic ability and causing premature leaf drop when infections become severe enough to affect the entire canopy.

The primary host for this pathogen is the Oriental persimmon. The disease is most prevalent in regions with high humidity and moderate rainfall during the growing season. In such environments, the microclimate within dense, poorly pruned orchard canopies creates a conducive habitat for the pathogen to thrive and spread rapidly between healthy leaves.

Symptoms of the disease initially appear as small, scattered, pale yellow or light brown spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots darken and may develop necrotic centers. When the fungus is highly active, numerous spots coalesce, leading to severe leaf chlorosis and premature abscission. This defoliation during the summer weakens the tree significantly.

The development and spread of Mycosphaerella horii are closely linked to moisture levels. The fungus survives the winter primarily in fallen infected leaves. During warm spring weather, rainfall and wind splashes transport the spores to the newly developing foliage, starting the cycle of infection that persists throughout the active growth phase of the tree.

The economic impact of this disease is reflected in reduced fruit yield and quality, as the tree lacks the energy reserves provided by a healthy leaf canopy. Furthermore, affected trees show decreased winter hardiness. Effective management involves a combination of cultural practices, such as clearing debris from the orchard floor, and the strategic application of fungicides to prevent spore germination.
