The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Mycosphaerella jaczewskii, which specifically targets the foliage of apple trees. This pathogen acts as a parasite that infects leaf tissue, significantly impeding photosynthesis and disrupting the overall health of the tree during the crucial growing season.

Apple trees are the primary host for this fungus. While it can be found on other related species, its impact is most significant in apple orchards. The pathogen is particularly prevalent in areas where high humidity and mild temperatures persist throughout the summer months, creating ideal conditions for fungal development.

Symptoms typically appear mid-summer as distinct spots on the leaves. These lesions often begin as yellowish or brownish discolorations and gradually turn into necrotic spots.
