The causative agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Mycosphaerella minima. It acts as a specialized plant pathogen that primarily infects the leaves of various woody plants, causing localized necrosis and structural damage to the leaf tissue through its mycelial colonization.
The disease is characterized by the formation of small, distinct leaf spots. These spots may change color from light brown to deep dark brown as the lesion matures. A diagnostic feature is the presence of minute, dark-colored fruiting bodies (pseudothecia) scattered across the infected spots, which appear during the later stages of the infection cycle.
Development and spread are strongly correlated with environmental factors such as high humidity and frequent rainfall. These conditions facilitate the release and germination of ascospores, which are spread by splashing water or wind to healthy foliage. The pathogen survives the winter primarily in infected fallen leaves, acting as a primary source of inoculum for the following spring.
The economic impact of the disease is associated with early defoliation, which inhibits the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis.
