Description
Mycosphaerellosis refers to a diverse group of plant diseases caused by ascomycete fungi within the order Mycosphaerellales. These pathogens are widely distributed and are known to cause significant damage to various agricultural and horticultural crops, primarily affecting leaf tissues and sometimes fruits, leading to defoliation and yield loss.
The host range of these fungi is extensive. They commonly infect cereals, fruit trees such as apple and pear, small fruits like strawberries, and several vegetables including cucumbers and tomatoes. Each specific pathogen within this order often shows a preference for a particular host species, but the general disease mechanism remains consistent across the group.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic leaf spots. Initially, these spots are small and chlorotic, but they enlarge and change color to brown, gray, or black as the tissue dies. In many cases, the center of the spot may fall out, creating a "shot-hole" effect. Tiny black fruiting bodies, known as pseudothecia or pycnidia, often develop within the spots, indicating the fungus is actively producing spores.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease epidemiology. High humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal for the germination and spread of spores. The pathogen survives the winter in infected plant debris left on the field or within the soil, allowing it to initiate new infections during the growing season as soon as environmental conditions become favorable.
Managing Mycosphaerellosis requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. Key strategies include the removal or deep incorporation of crop residues, crop rotation to break the disease cycle, and the selection of resistant cultivars. Preventive fungicide applications are often necessary during periods of wet weather to protect susceptible crops from severe outbreaks and secondary infections.
