Mycosyrinx is a fungal disease caused by the basidiomycete fungus Mycosyrinx cissi. This pathogen belongs to the smut fungi group, specifically known for attacking plants within the Vitaceae family, causing localized hypertrophies and structural deformities in stems and inflorescences.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are members of the Cissus genus, including Vitis vinifera and various ornamental climbing plants. The fungus colonizes the internal tissues of the host, stimulating abnormal cell division that manifests as galls or swellings. Eventually, these growths rupture, releasing a characteristic dark, powdery mass of teliospores.

Visual symptoms include distorted shoot growth, the development of swellings, and a proliferation of stunted, twiggy branches. These structural changes severely disrupt the vascular system of the vine, limiting nutrient flow to the extremities and causing the premature death of the affected plant tissues.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity and moderate temperatures are critical for the development and spread of the infection. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, rainwater splash, or through infected cuttings exchanged between vineyards. Long-distance transmission often occurs due to the movement of asymptomatic, latently infected nursery stock.

The damage caused by Mycosyrinx is significant, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and loss of harvest. To manage the disease, growers must focus on strict phytosanitary measures, including the destruction of symptomatic plant parts and the use of certified pathogen-free vines. Integrated pest management, involving the rotation of fungicides and regular monitoring, remains the standard for maintaining vineyard health.
