Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Mycosyrinx cissi, a member of the smut fungi group known for causing significant structural abnormalities in its host plants. The pathogen invades the vascular tissues and meristems, triggering an abnormal proliferation of plant cells.
The primary host for this pathogen is the genus Cissus, particularly those species grown in greenhouses or tropical climates. It is a specialized parasite that can severely impact the health and ornamental value of these climbing plants if left unmanaged.
The symptoms are characterized by the appearance of galls, swellings, and tumor-like growths on stems and leaf petioles. As the disease progresses, these structures rupture to expose a mass of black, powdery teliospores, which are the primary means of dispersal for the fungus.
The development of Mycosyrinx cissi is strongly correlated with high humidity levels and poor ventilation, which favor spore germination and infection. The pathogen spreads primarily through airborne spores, contaminated cutting tools, or the movement of infected plant materials across cultivation areas.
Economic and aesthetic damage involves stunted growth, wilting, and the eventual death of affected plant tissues. Effective control strategies include:
