These fungi are characterized by the development of prominent black, stromatic fruiting bodies on the surface of branches and trunks, which can be mistaken for dead tissue or soot-like deposits.

The primary hosts for these fungi are fruit-bearing trees, particularly citrus, apples, and pears. In many ecosystems, Myriangium species are known to have a symbiotic or parasitic relationship with scale insects, where the fungus thrives on the secretions left behind by these pests on the tree bark.

Symptoms of the infection involve the appearance of thick, black, crust-like stroma that covers parts of the bark. These structures are hard to the touch and can grow in patches, effectively coating the twigs. As the fungus develops, it creates a physical barrier on the bark, which can lead to localized drying and damage to the underlying plant tissues.
