Myriogenospora leaf binding, caused by the fungus Myriogenospora aciculispora, is a specialized disease affecting sugar cane crops. This pathogen is known for binding the leaves of the plant at the growing point, which severely disrupts the plant's structural development and metabolic activities.
The primary clinical sign of the infection is the presence of a white or grayish fungal stromata that wraps around the spindle leaves, effectively cementing them together. This prevents the leaves from unfurling, causing them to become twisted and stunted, which ultimately hampers the growth of the stalk and reduces the plant's overall vigor.
The development of this disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and frequent rainfall. These conditions facilitate the germination of fungal spores and their spread via wind and water splashes within dense sugar cane fields, where the canopy traps moisture and provides a conducive microclimate for the pathogen.
