Myxomphalia (Myxomphalia) is a genus of fungi belonging to the Tricholomataceae family, which, under specific ecological conditions, exhibits properties of a facultative pathogen. In agricultural practice, this fungus is often viewed as a saprotroph living on plant debris; however, under stress or excessive soil moisture, it can compromise the root systems and root zones of vulnerable crops.
The disease is caused by fungi of this genus. It is classified as a type of root and stem base rot. The pathogen utilizes specialized enzyme systems to decompose cellulose and lignin in plant tissues, which poses a significant threat to crops experiencing environmental stress or poor soil aeration.
Symptoms of infestation include yellowing of the lower leaves, stunted growth, and eventual wilting of the plant. Upon closer inspection of the root system, one may observe tissue softening, discoloration (browning) of the roots, and the presence of a fungal mat under high-humidity conditions. Affected areas frequently become mushy and emit a characteristic musty, decayed odor.
Development and spread are directly linked to soil microclimate conditions. Cool temperatures combined with saturated soil substrates provide an ideal environment for Myxomphalia activity. The fungus spreads via mycelial growth through soil horizons and through spores, which are transported by water runoff or contaminated agricultural tools.
Protection and prevention strategies require a comprehensive approach to soil health management. Primary measures include:
- practicing crop rotation to disrupt the pathogen's life cycle;
- improving soil drainage to prevent water stagnation;
- sterilizing growing media in greenhouse environments;
- utilizing high-quality, resistant planting material to minimize susceptibility to root rots.
