In agronomy, this fungus is identified as a causative agent of mold and degradation of plant debris, often affecting crops that are already under physiological stress.

The disease is caused by microscopic fungi that produce characteristic cleistothecia with appendages, facilitating the dispersal of spores throughout the environment. Infection typically occurs through root systems or aerial parts that have been compromised by environmental factors or other primary pathogen attacks.

Symptoms of infestation include the appearance of a visible fungal coating, ranging from white to brownish colors, on affected plant surfaces. As the disease progresses, tissues become brittle, darken, and begin to rot, reflecting the enzymatic degradation of cell structures by the fungal mycelium.

The development and spread of Myxotrichum are highly dependent on high humidity and poor ventilation.
