Unlike phytopathogenic fungi that damage crop tissues directly, Myzocytiopsis acts as a biological control agent by infecting and killing small arthropods, such as aphids, which are common pests on various agricultural and horticultural crops.
The biology of the pathogen is driven by its dependence on water for dispersal. The fungus produces zoospores that swim through thin films of moisture on the leaf surface to locate potential hosts. Once a host is identified, the zoospore attaches to the insect's cuticle and utilizes enzymatic processes to penetrate the exoskeleton and infect the internal tissues.
